A contagious fever, transmitted to humans by certain types of ticks, is marked by elevated body temperature, headaches, bone and muscle aches, a distinctive red and spotty rash, as well as mental symptoms. Initially believed to be confined to the Rocky Mountain region, this illness is now found across the entire Western Hemisphere and is also known as Rocky Mountain spotted fever.
