Mucilage

Slime or jelly-like excretion, chemically composed of high molecular weight carbohydrate.

A thick aqueous solution of a gum used as a lubricant in skin preparations, for the production of pills, and for the suspension of insoluble substances. The most important mucilages are of acacia, tragacanth, and starch.


This is prepared from acacia or tragacanth gum, and is used as an ingredient of mixtures containing solid particles in order to keep the latter from settling, and also as a demulcent.
