A swollen sac or cavity filled with mucus secreted from cells in its inner lining. Also known as mucus cysts, mucoceles consist of clear fluid trapped beneath a thin layer of mucous membrane. They usually appear on the inner surface of the lips. Although mucoceles are harmless and usually painless, they can be bothersome. Treatment may involve surgery.
A space or organ distended with mucus. For example, it may occur in the gall bladder when the exit duct becomes obstructed so that the mucus secretions are retained and dilate the cavity of the organ.
