Myringotomy

Surgical incision of the tympanic membrane (eardrum).

A surgical incision of the eardrum performed to release fluid or pus from the middle ear.

An incision of the eardrum to establish drainage in infection of the middle ear.

A surgical operation to make an opening in the eardrum to allow fluid to escape.

Surgical incision into the tympanic membrane to relieve pressure and release pus from the middle ear.

Surgical process of cutting into the eardrum to remove fluid from the middle ear.

A surgical procedure involving an incision into the eardrum to promote drainage of fluid from the middle ear to improve hearing and relieve pain. Myringotomy is generally performed on children who have an accumulation of fluid in the middle ear, called middle ear effusion, which causes pain and impairs hearing. The fluid buildup in the middle ear is often caused by otitis media (inflammation of the middle ear). It may also be caused by a common cold, allergies, or a respiratory tract infection. The buildup of pus and mucus puts pressure on the eardrum, causing pain, swelling, and redness. Because the eardrum does not vibrate properly, hearing is impaired. In some cases, the eardrum may rupture as a result of the pressure against it.

Incision of the eardrum to create an artificial opening, which relieves pressure and allows drainage of fluid from an inflamed middle ear (otitis media).

An operation to incise the drum of the ear to provide drainage for an infection of the middle ear. It is now done mainly in children with persistent glue ear.

Incision of the tympanic membrane with placement of a tympanostomy tube. This procedure is most often performed on children with recurrent otitis media or medically refractory middle ear effusion.

A surgical intervention is undertaken to alleviate the infection within the middle ear through drainage. A more recent variation of this procedure, known as laser myringotomy, employs a laser as opposed to a scalpel.

A surgical aperture created in the eardrum to facilitate drainage from the middle ear space. This procedure is commonly carried out to address chronic glue ear in children. Concurrently, a grommet may be implanted into the eardrum.
