Myxedema

A term for hypothyroidism that is often used to describe patients in whom the underactivity of the thyroid gland is severe and long-standing.

A disorder resulting from a thyroid deficiency in adulthood and characterized by mental dullness.

Advanced deficiency of thyroxine in adults.

The adult or acquired form of hypothyroidism characterized by decreased metabolic rate, lethargy, decreased mental alertness, weight gain, and other somatic changes.

Syndrome caused by deficiency of thyroid hormone in adults (hypothyroidism), including cold intolerance, fatigue, sluggishness, skin coarsening, weight gain, mental dullness, and in women menstmal irregularities.

Form of hypothyroidism which occurs in adults with decreased T4 and thyrotropin hormone production; key symptom is water retention; treatment is usually by administration of synthetic T4 levothyroxine sodium or Synthroid.

A condition characterized by dry, puffy skin and swelling around the lips and nose. It is a feature of the most severe type of hypothyroidism (a slowing of metabolism due to decreased activity of the thyroid gland). Other symptoms include intolerance of the cold, hair loss, decreased energy, hoarseness, muscle aches, constipation, weight gain, and memory loss. Left untreated, myxedema can lead to coma and death. Myxedema is diagnosed with thyroid function blood tests. Synthetic thyroid hormones are used to treat myxedema.

A dry firm waxy swelling of the skin and subcutaneous tissues found in patients with underactive thyroid glands.

Infiltration of the skin by mucopolysaccharides, giving it a waxy or coarsened appearance. Myxedematous skin is seen particularly in patients with hypothyroidism.

Hypothyroidism is a medical condition characterized by notable and visibly swollen facial features, an enlarged tongue, and a reduced display of emotions.

A condition resulting from reduced thyroid gland activity, leading to decreased basal metabolic rate and heightened sensitivity to cold.
