Appointed by President Nixon in 1971, the Committee’s mission was to 1. describe the state of the art of health education; 2. define the need for health education in the United States; 3. establish goals, priorities, and objectives for health education; and 4. determine the most appropriate structure, organization, and function for a national health education foundation. The Committee’s report in 1973 led to the establishment of the Bureau of Health Education in 1974 within the structure of the U.S. Public Health Service. In 1975, the National Center for Health Education was established.
