Navicular

Boat-shaped, like the bow of a pirogue or canoe.

Relating to a navicular bone.

Largest of the proximal row of wrist bones on the thumb side; it is boat-shaped and often fractured in young adults. The usual cause is a fall on the out-stretched hand, or some type of twisting, violent motion involving the wrist (e.g., kickback from the starting handle of a motor or pulling from a horse’s rope). Navicular fractures may be difficult to see on X rays. Also called scaphoid bone. A similarly named bone is found in the foot at the base of the great toe. Navicular fractures, even when properly treated, may result m death of the broken bone (avascular necrosis) due to its perilous blood supply.

Bones of the wrist and ankle that are shaped like a boat.
