Nursing home

A facility that provides secure, protective, custodial care of the sick, elderly, or disabled.


Generally, a wide range of institutions, other than hospitals, which provide various levels of maintenance and personal or nursing care to people who are unable to care for themselves and who may have health problems which range from minimal to very serious. The term includes free standing institutions, or identifiable components of other health facilities which provide nursing care and related services, personal care, and residential care. Nursing homes include skilled nursing facilities, intermediate care facilities, and extended care facilities but not boarding homes.


A house where convalescents.or dependent elderly people can live under medical supervision by a qualified nurse.


An institution which provides continuous nursing and other services to patients who are not acutely ill, but who need nursing and personal services as inpatients. A nursing home has permanent facilities and an organized professional staff.


An extended-care facility for patients who need continued health care, usually after a hospital stay. Nursing homes provide 24-hr nursing supervision, rehabilitation services, activity and social services, a safe environment, careful attention to nutritional needs, and measures to prevent complications of decreased mobility. In addition, some nursing homes have specialty units for patients with dementia, chronic ventilator support, or head injuries. Some nursing homes provide subacute units for patients who are not as medically stable as patients in the typical nursing home setting.


A facility that provides long-term care for elderly or chronically ill people who are incapable of caring for themselves.
