A small nut, often used in Cyperaceae for their often small hardened fruits.


(In Cyperaceae) hardened, usually minute, one-seeded fruit, the surface of which may be smooth to variously patterned and a diagnostic character for many species. Often called an achene in literature on Cyperaceae.
