Nutrients

Components of food that help to nourish the body by performing any of the following functions: provide energy, serve as building material, help maintain or repair body parts, promote or sustain growth, and regulate or assist body processes.

Essential dietary factors such as vitamins, minerals, amino acids and fatty acids. Metabolic fuels (sources of energy) are not termed nutrients so that a commonly used phrase is ‘energy and nutrients’.

Any substance that contributes to the growth and health of a living organism.

Substance obtained from food and utilized by the body to promote growth, maintenance and/or repair.

Foods or chemical humans need to grow and metabolize. They must be taken in from the environment.

The chemical substances in foods necessary for health and for maintenance of life: vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Water is sometimes regarded as a nutrient.

A substance in food which is necessary to provide energy or to help the body grow, e.g. protein, fat or a vitamin.

In respect to plant growth, nutrients are the water-soluble substances taken up by the roots. The major nutrients, required in high concentration, are the elements nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, while the minor nutrients include the elements iron, magnesium, calcium, manganese, zinc, boron, sulfur and molybdenum. These do not actually form the plant ‘food’, which consists of carbohydrates manufactured by photosynthesis from water and carbon dioxide, using the sun’s energy, but they all have key positions in the protein and enzyme molecules essential to plant growth.

Ingredients of foods with specific functions in the nourishment of the body. They comprise carbohydrates, proteins and fats as macro (large) nutrients, and many vitamins and minerals as micro (small) nutrients.

A substance needed by a living thing to maintain life, health, and reproduction.

Chemical components present in foods that furnish the body with heat and energy, provide material for the growth and repair of the body tissues, and assist in the regulation of body processes. Carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals and water are all nutrients.

The chemical substances present in food that are utilized by the body as components for synthesizing needed materials and for fuel.

A nutrient is a chemical in food that provides functions that are important for health. These may include participation in biochemical reactions, providing body structure, or contributing energy to the body. Some nutrients are essential, which means they must be provided in the diet. Other nutrients are nonessential, which means that they can be sufficiently produced within the body to meet the body’s demands.

Substances, such as vitamins, found in food and which the body needs to function properly.

Substance that must be supplied by the diet to provide for normal health of the body, and for energy supplies and materials for growth. Nutrients include proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals.

A chemical substance in food that is essential to health maintenance, normal body function, growth, and reproduction. Vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, fats, proteins, and water all are essential nutrients.

A substance that must be consumed as part of the diet to provide a source of energy, material for growth, or substance to regulate growth or energy production. Nutrients include carbohydrates, fats, proteins, minerals, and vitamins.

Foods or liquids that supply the body with the chemicals necessary for metabolism. Essential nutrients are those entities that the body either cannot synthesize or cannot synthesize quantities sufficient to meet needs. Nutrients can be subdivided into the macronutrients, consisting of protein, carbohydrate, and fat; the micronutrients, which include vitamins and minerals; and water.

A substance in food that provides energy or helps form body tissues and that is necessary for life and growth.

A chemical compound (such as protein, fat, carbohydrate, vitamins or minerals) that make up foods. These compounds are used by the body to function and grow.

A substance found in food that the body needs to regulate bodily functions, promote growth, repair body tissues, and obtain energy.

Substances found in food that provide energy, regulate metabolism, and help with growth and repair of body tissues.

A nutrient is a type of food substance that serves as a source of energy and is essential for growth and repair. Various examples of nutrients include vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, fats, and proteins.

A crucial dietary component, which can include carbohydrates, proteins, specific fats, vitamins, and minerals.
