A physician who specializes in providing medical and surgical care related to the female reproductive system, throughout their adult lives, including during pregnancy. Some obstetricians specialize only in care of women during pregnancy, and some gynecologists specialize only in care of the female reproductive system apart from pregnancy, but most carry out both activities. Obstetricians who specialize in caring for women having high-risk pregnancies are called maternal and fetal specialists or perinatologists.
