The light shines through the pupil to the back of the eye to view the retina (the thin layer of nerve tissue that detects light and relays visual information to the brain), the retinal blood vessels, and the optic disc (the point where the optic nerve joins the retina). The fundus provides clues to the health of the eye and often of the whole body. Changes in blood vessels in the retina can indicate the severity of hypertension. Small particles in these same vessels signal the formation of plaques or clots containing cholesterol and indicate increased risk for heart attack or stroke. Changes caused by diabetes mellitus, type 1 and type 2, and tears or holes in the retina are visible through the ophthalmoscope. The shape and color of the optic disc can indicate eye disease.
