The medical specialty that studies, diagnoses, and treats disorders of the musculoskeletal system, including the bones, joints, muscles of the arms and legs, ligaments, tendons, nerves, the spine, and associated structures. Orthopedic surgery uses medical, surgical, and physical means to study and treat problems in the form and function of the body’s bones, muscles, and joints that are inherited or have developed over a lifetime. These may include deformities, injuries, and degenerative diseases of the spine, hands, feet, ligaments, tendons, nerves, and joints in children and adults.


Surgical prevention and correction of musculoskeletal deformities and/or injuries.


Surgical procedures conducted specifically on the skeletal framework, which may encompass joint replacements as well as surgeries involving the vertebrae.


Surgical or manual adjustment of bone, ligament, and joint abnormalities or malformations.
