Otitis

Inflammation of the inner or outer parts of the ear.

A bacterial infection of the ear canal. Usually caused from swimming. Symptoms include inflammation of the ear canal.

Inflammation of the ear, either otitis externa, otitis media, or otitis interna (labyrinthitis).

Inflammation of the ear. Otitis externa is inflammation of the canal joining the eardrum to the external ear (the external auditory meatus) and is often found in swimmers {swimmer’s ear). Otitis media is inflammation, usually due to viral or bacterial infection, of the middle ear (the chamber lying behind the eardrum and containing the three bony ossicles that conduct sound to the inner ear). Symptoms include severe pain and a high fever; unless treated (with antibiotics), it may lead to conductive deafness. Secretory otitis media (glue ear) is a chronic accumulation of fluid in the tympanic cavity, causing deafness. Otitis interna (labyrinthitis) is inflammation of the inner ear, causing the sudden onset of vomiting, vertigo, and loss of balance.

Inflammation of the ear. It is differentiated as externa, media, and interna, depending upon which portion of the ear is inflamed.
