Oxygen debt

The volume of oxygen required to oxidize the lactic acid produced by exercise.

The amount of oxygen required in the postexercise period in excess of oxygen consumption to reverse the anaerobic reactions during exercise period.

A physical state that occurs when the body can no longer process and transport sufficient amounts of oxygen for continued muscle contraction. A result of vigorous exercise.

After strenuous (i.e., anaerobic) physical activity, the oxygen required in the recovery period, in addition to that required while resting, to oxidize the excess lactic acid produced and to replenish the depleted stores of adenosine triphosphate and phospho-creatinase.
