Oxyhaemoglobin

A compound of haemoglobin and oxygen, which is the way oxygen is carried in arterial blood from the lungs to the tissues.

The compound formed when the pigment haemoglobin in the erythrocytes (red blood cells) combines with oxygen. This is a reversible reaction whereby the oxygen, carried in this way from the lungs to the body’s tissues, is released to take part in metabolic activities.

The compound produced by the chemical interaction between iron in heme, the pigment within red blood cell hemoglobin, and oxygen. Oxyhemoglobin imparts the vibrant red hue to the blood within the arteries. This compound serves as the means through which oxygen is conveyed from the lungs to the tissues, where it is subsequently liberated.
