Pulsed lavage
The irrigation of a tissue surface or body cavity with intermittent sprays or splashes of fluid. It is used in several procedures to reduce the bacterial burden of contaminated surfaces, but it may occasionally cause tissue damage or infection if nonsterile solutions are accidentally employed.

Pulsed-dose oxygen delivery
A means of oxygen conservation in which oxygen flow is s provided to the patient in the first third of inspiration, instead of continuously throughout the respiratory cycle.

Waterhammer pulse
A pulse with a powerful upstroke and then sudden disappearance; a hallmark of aortic regurgitation.

Vermicular pulse
A small, frequent pulse with a wormlike feeling.

Venous pulse
A pulse in a vein, especially one of the large veins near the heart, such as the internal or external jugular. Normally it is undulating and scarcely palpable. In conditions such as tricuspid regurgitation, it is pronounced.

Vagus pulse
A slow pulse resulting from parasympathetic influence on heart rate, mediated by the vagus nerve. A sluggish pulse resulting from the restraining influence of the vagus nerve on the heart.

Unequal pulse
A pulse in which beats vary in force.

Undulating pulse
A pulse that seems to have several successive waves.

Tricrotic pulse
A pulse with three separate expansions during each heartbeat.

Tremulous pulse
A pulse in which a series of oscillations is felt with each beat.
