  • Axillary lymph nodes

    Lymphatic structures that collect chyme in the area below the shoulder and armpit.

    Ability to contract without neural stimulation. The unique property of cardiac muscle tissue to contract without nervous stimulation.  

  • Auscultatory gap

    Temporary disappearance of sounds at the end of Korotkoff phase I and the beginning of phase II while listening with a stethoscope. A silent period in the knocking sounds heard with a stethoscope over an artery, between the systolic and diastolic blood pressures, when the blood pressure is measured with a sphygmomanometer.  

  • Augmented cough

    Method of increasing force and effectiveness of chest muscles by placing the palm of the hand on the abdominal musculature below the ribs during expiration and then removing the hand during inspiration.  

  • Auditory aura

    Abnormal sensations of sound that precede a seizure.  

  • Auditory aphasia

    Impaired comprehension of spoken words in the presence of normal hearing.  

  • Attenuated vaccine

    Vaccine in which the antigen’s ability to produce disease has been lessened or eliminated by heat or chemical measures; after inoculation, mild symptoms may result.  

  • Attending behaviors

    Nonverbal signs indicating focused listening, or interest in what another person is communicating.
