  • Atrioventricular canal

    Refers to a combination of defects in the atrial and ventricular septa and portions of tricuspid and mitral valves.  

  • Atrioseptoplasty

    Surgical repair of a defect in the partition between the atria of the heart.  

  • Atrial ectopic beats

    Early or out-of-sequence contraction of the atrium of the heart.  

  • Atopognosis

    Inability to correctly identify the location of a tactile sensation. Inability to locate a sensation of touch or feeling.  

  • Atheromatous plaque

    An area of swelling in the lining of an artery due to deposits of lipids. An obstruction in the lining of an artery, formed by the abnormal accumulation of lipids (fats) and sometimes calcium.

    Inability of the muscles of the digestive tract to relax.  

  • Asyntaxia

    Lack of appropriate and orderly development of an embryo. Failure of the embryo to develop properly.

    A brain disorder characterized by the inability to bring thoughts together to form a cohesive concept.   • Asynchronous pacing

    Electrical stimulation of the heart that sets a rate that is independent of the heart’s own pacemakers. Cardiac pacing set at a rate independent of the heart’s own pacemakers. This allows pacemaking at heart rates that are faster or slower than the patient’s diseased pacemaker.  

  • Asterognosis

    Inability to discern an object by touch alone.
