  • Intervertebral

    To the space between two vertebrae, as the intervertebral discs.  

  • Interval

    Space between parts or time between events (e.g., the Q-T interval in the activity of the ventricles of the heart). A space or time between two objects or periods.  

  • Interstitial pneumonia

    Chronic inflammation of the lungs, characterized by progressive dyspnea, fever, and bluish discoloration of the skin (cyanosis). It may be caused by a hypersensitivity reaction to a particular drug or by an autoimmune disorder. Treatment is symptomatic, but the disease often progresses to pulmonary or heart failure.  

  • Intercellular space

    Area between cells of a tissue, organ, or organism.  

  • Inhalation therapy

    Treatment in which oxygen, water, or a drug is introduced into the respiratory tract with inhaled air. It may be used to provide oxygen or to administer drugs to liquefy mucus or dilate the bronchial passageways.   • Inhalation anesthesia

    General anesthesia achieved by inhalation of an anesthetic gas or volatile liquid; widely used inhalation anesthetics include cyclopropane, halothane, enflurane, and isoflurane.   • Ingrown toenail

    Toenail whose free ends grow into, or become pressed into, the skin, causing inflammation and sometimes secondary infection. A toenail that grows into the surrounding skin or tissue of the toe.   • Ingrown hair

    Hair that does not emerge from the follicle but remains embedded in the skin, usually causing inflammation. A hair that reenters the skin, causing a foreign body reaction.  

  • Infrared therapy

    Use of infrared radiation (e.g., in hot water bottles, heating pads, or incandescent lights) to relieve pain and increase blood circulation to a particular area of the body.  

  • Inelastic

    Not flexible; unable to stretch; remaining the same length and tension.
