Accountable health plan
A proposed form of health care plan which would be accountable for meeting certain federal requirements for providing certain standardized health services. Synonym(s): accountable health partnership (AHP), approved health plan (AHP).

Access to health care
The ability to obtain health care. Access includes available physicians and facilities, transportation, acceptance by the facility, and means of payment. “Access” is often used specifically to mean eligibility for (access to) insurance benefits, since lack of insurance can be a formidable barrier to receiving health care. Access physical
Physical access. Access ordinarily means the ability of patients to physically get to (or into) health care. Facilities and resources must be located where they can be reached, and they must be designed so that handicapped persons may enter.

Accelerated death benefit
An amount paid to an individual, under a life insurance contract, when that individual has been diagnosed with a specific medical condition (generally a terminal illness). After that person’s death, the balance is paid to the beneficiary just like any other life insurance.

Abuse health care
The improper or excessive use of health care products and services. Abuse may result from excessive (unnecessary) use of diagnostic tests, unnecessary surgical and other procedures, and so forth. Abuse may be either intentional or unintentional, and may or may not be illegal.

Twelve steps
A self-help plan designed to overcome addiction. The plan is based on open admission of one’s powerlessness over substances such as alcohol or drugs or particular behavior patterns, support from others in similar situations, and the acceptance of a “Higher Power.”

Resocialization
The process by which an individual is taught to reenter society and resume a productive life-style following completion of a drugrehabilitation program. Supportive measures to reintegrate a client into family and community life following a critical or long-term hospitalization.

Psychoactive drugs
Substances that temporarily alter the body’s central nervous system (e.g., uppers, downers, etc.). Psychoactive drugs are mind-affecting or mind-altering chemical substances that change one’s thinking, feelings, perceptions, and behaviors. Outpatient treatment
Method of drug rehabilitation in which clients regularly visit a treatment center for guidance and counseling, but continue to live at home. Medical care in a hospital that does not include an overnight stay. Outpatient treatment may also be provided at a clinic or doctor’s office.

Inpatient treatment
Method of drug rehabilitation in which clients are removed from their normal surroundings and enter a hospital or specialized facility where they undergo treatment. Care or treatment provided in a hospital after a patient’s admission.
