  • Monomeric formula

    Specialized formulation of hydrolyzed macronutrients.

  • Mobile glucose transporters

Glucose-specific transport proteins sequestered in the cell, which, when needed, migrate to the cell surface, bind to glucose, and transport it through the plasma membrane to its site of use. There are several different proteins involved. They are identified as GLUT 1, 2, 3, and 4.

  • Mitral insufficiency

Failure of the mitral valve of the heart to close completely causing blood to flow backward from left ventricle to left atrium during ventricular contraction. Faulty sealing of the bicuspid valve, causing backflow of blood into the atrium from the ventricle. Failure of the mitral valve of the heart to close tightly, causing it to…

  • Milk alkali syndrome

Condition resulting from excessive ingestion of milk and absorbable antacids, which causes increased serum calcium and renal dysfunction. Elevated blood calcium without an increase in calcium or phosphate in the urine, renal insufficiency, and alkalosis due to prolonged intake of excessive amounts of milk and soluble alkali. This condition is usually found as an undesired…

  • Miglitol

An α-glucosidase inhibitor that may have use as a hypoglycemic agent.

  • Mid-arm circumference

An anthropometric measure used to calculate total arm area as part of an estimate of body fat and muscle mass.

  • Microvascular

Capillaries; vessels of a diameter sufficient for the passage of red blood cell one at a time.

  • Microsatellite polymorphism

Heterozygosity of a certain microsatellite marker in an individual.

  • Microsatellite marker

A dispersed group of 2-5 base sequences that are repeated up to 50 times. May occur at 50-100 locations in the genome. Used in linkage analysis.

  • Microflora

Advantageous bacteria that thrive in the gastrointestinal tract. In a specific area, the plant life that is microscopic in size. Microorganisms present in or characteristic of a special location, e.g., the colon.
