  • Semipermeable membrane

    A membrane which allows some substances in liquid solution to pass through but not others. A membrane that allows the passage of some molecules but not others. Cell membranes are semipermeable.     Allowing some types of particle to pass through but not others. Characteristic of cell membranes that permit the passage of some materials but not others; also called selectively permeable.

  • Self-retaining catheter

    A catheter which remains in place until it is deliberately removed. A bladder catheter designed to remain in place (e.g., a Foley catheter).  

  • Self-image

    The opinion which a person has about how worthwhile, attractive, or intelligent he or she is. An individual’s perception of their own personality and capabilities. Certain neurotic conditions arise from a mismatch between self-perception and how others perceive the individual. Psychotherapy seeks to address neurosis by altering a person’s self-perception.
