Acute lymphocytic leukaemia

Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis
An encephalomyelitis or myelitis believed to result from an autoimmune attack on the myelin of the central nervous system. An uncommon demyelinating, inflammatory brain disease that may occur after some viral infections or some vaccinations.

Acute care
Medical or surgical treatment in a hospital, usually for a short period, for a patient with a sudden severe illness or injury. Health care delivered to patients experiencing sudden illness or trauma. Acute care generally occurs in the prehospital, hospital, or emergency department and is usually short-term rather than long-term or chronic care.

Active principle
The main medicinal ingredient of a drug which makes it have the required effect on a person. The portion of a pharmaceutical preparation that produces the therapeutic action.

Active movement
Movement made by a person using his or her own willpower and muscles. Voluntary movement of joints and muscles through their usual range of motion, accomplished without external assistance.

Actinomycin
An antibiotic used in the treatment of children with cancer. A cytotoxic drug, produced by Streptomyces bacteria, that inhibits growth of cancer cells. There are several forms, which are administered by injection. Actinomycin C may damage bone marrow. Actinomycin D may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, blood disorders, and bone-marrow damage.
