Linear leaf
A long, narrow leaf, as in most Grasses.

Lanceolate leaf
A long narrow leaf, slightly wider below, gradually tapering to its tip (lance-shaped).

The blade of a leaf (as distinct from the petiole).

Kidney-shaped leaf
A leaf with a rounded outline, with the stalk in a notch between two rounded basal lobes.

lnvolucre
A whorl, collar or ruff of bracts at the base of a flowerhead, or (less often) of a single flower.

lnternode
The length of stem between nodes.

Glandular hair
A hair with a gland on its tip (through a hand lens, looking like a stalk with a blob on the end).

Garden escape
A cultivated or ‘garden plant that occurs outside of gardens, which may or may not have become naturalised.

Fen carr
Boggy woodland developed over fen by invasion of shrubs and trees.

Fen
A plant community on base-rich, often alkaline and calcareous, wetland dominated, not by Sphagnum mosses and Heath family members (as in a bog), but by Dicotyledonous herbs, Sedges and Grasses, etc. A specialized wetland permanently supplied with mineralized groundwater.
