  • Antihypertensive medications

Drugs that lower elevated blood pressure.

  • Angioedema

    Angioedema

A vascular reaction usually causing swelling in the skin and/ or upper-respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts. Angioedema (hereditary) is a genetic disorder associated with the deficiency of Cl inhibitor, a protein in the blood. This disorder is characterized by episodes of swelling in areas of the skin and the tissue beneath or in mucous membranes that…

  • Aneroid sphygmomanometer

A type of sphygmomanometer that measures blood pressure on a dial and that depends on the displacement of a spring rather than a mercury column. This device s accuracy should be compared periodically with results of a mercury sphygmomanometer, as the latter is the most reliable method of measuring blood pressure.

  • Anaerobic exercise

Activity requiring minimal motion without much increase in intake of oxygen, such as weight lifting. Exercise that does not require the lungs to increase the rate at which oxygen is exchanged, anaerobics; aerobics. The term aerobic is used to refer to reactions or organisms that require oxygen. When applied to exercise, this term is used…

  • Alpha agonist

A drug that acts on the brain to decrease sympathetic nerve activity and thereby lower blood pressure.

  • Alphax receptors

“Targets” on various cells that, when stimulated by nor¬ epinephrine (or similar substances), cause a number of responses including constriction of arteries and arterioles, which in turn causes hypertension.

  • Alpha blocker

A drug that blocks norepinephrine (a hormone that constricts arterioles) from stimulating receptors on arterioles, thereby causing arterioles to dilate and lowering blood pressure.

  • Acromegaly

An endocrine disease causing enlargement of parts of the skeleton due to over-secretion of growth hormone by the pituitary gland. A progressive disease associated with hyperfunction of the pituitary gland and characterized by enlargement of the skeleton, hands, feet, and face. A disease caused by excessive quantities of growth hormone produced by the pituitary gland,…

  • ACE inhibitor

A drug that lowers blood pressure by inhibiting the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) from producing angiotensin, which constricts arteries and arterioles and elevates blood pressure.

  • Zigzag

With short sections arranged in alternating directions from side to side.
