  • Subglobose

    (Of spores) Nearly globose, having a Q value slightly more than 1.  

  • Subdistant

    (Of gills) Spaced intermediately between close and distant.  

  • Subdecurrent

    (Of gills) Running a short distance down the stem.  

  • Sterile base

    The sterile, chambered base below the gleba in certain gasteromycetes.  

  • Squamules

    Minute, tiny scales.  

  • Spore print

    The visible deposit of basidiospores made by placing the cap of a fungus, removed from its stem, on white paper and covering it for a few hours.  

  • Slippery

    (Of cap or stem) Having a thin layer of mucouslike material making the surface wet and hard to hold, viscid.  

  • Slimy

    (Of cap or stem) Having a thick layer of mucouslike, sticky material that pulls away from the surface in long strands, glutinous. Resembling slime or a viscid substance; regarding a growth, the ability to adhere to a needle so it can be drawn out as a long thread.  

  • Siderophilous

    (of granules in basidia and spore walls in Lyophyllaceae) Staining purplish-black when treated with aceto-carmine dye in the presence of iron oxide and heated; same as cyanophilous reaction.

    The fusion of nuclei of different mating types, followed by meiosis to produce spores. The process by which half of the genes of each parent organism combine to create a new individual.
