  • Separable

    (Of gills or stems) Easily separated from the cap.  

  • Scaber

    Rough knobs of tufted hyphal ends, projecting from surface of stem; characteristic of the bolete genus Leccinum.  

  • Saprobe

    An organism that lives on dead or decaying organisms or organic material.  

  • Saclike

    (Of volva) Shaped like a cup or sac around the base of the stem, saccate.  

  • Rhizomorph

    A rootlike structure attached to the stem base, black and hard, carbonaceous, often penetrating the substrate; common in Armillaria and some species of Marasmius.  

  • Radially arranged

    Radiating from a central point, like the spokes of a wheel, as in differently colored or shaded fibrils on the cap of a fungus.  

  • Pseudorhiza

    A long, false rootlike structure; defines the genera Hymenopellis and Phaeocollybia.  

  • Pruina

    Small white or colored dots, often on the apex of the stem but sometimes covering the stem.  

  • Polypore

    Common name for members of the family Polyporaceae, with firmly attached, thin tube layers on leathery or woody fruiting bodies.  

  • Pleurotoid

    Type of mushroom fruit body with cap and gills, but either lacking a stem or having a highly reduced and lateral stem; as in Pleurotus.
