Reverse architecture
When the crest of the interdental gingiva or bone is located apical to its midfacial and midlingual margins.

Retrusive
A mandibular position that may be more distal than that described as maximum intercuspation.

Retrusion
Movement of the mandible directed posteriorly. Active backward movement of the mandible (lower jawbone) relative to the maxilla (upper jawbone). The process of forcing backward, especially with reference to the teeth.

Retruded contact position
The occlusal relationship that occurs when the mandible and the condyles are in their most retruded position. This position may be more retruded than the position referred to as centric relation.

Retromylohyoid area
An obsolete term referring to the area located lingual to the retromolar tissue pad extending inferiorly toward the floor of mouth and distally to the retromylohyoid curtain.

Mass of freely movable, nonkeratinized mucosal tissue located posterior to the retromolar papilla of the most distal tooth in the mandible.

Retromolar implant
Endosseous dental implant placed in the mandibular retromolar area for the purpose of protraction or retraction of the dentition.

Retrognathism
Position of mandible and/or maxilla that is posterior to its normal craniofacial relationship. Typically refers to the mandible. A type of malocclusion in which the jaw and upper front teeth project too far forward.
