  • Rebase

    A dental laboratory process by which the entire base material of an existing removable prosthesis, but not the teeth, is replaced. To refit a denture by replacing the base material without altering the occlusal characteristics.  

  • Reattachment

    A periodontics term that describes the reconnection of epithelial and/or connective tissues to the surfaces of roots or bone after the connection is disrupted by surgical or other means. Not to be confused with new attachment.  

  • Reamer

    Tool designed to finish the mating surface of a metal cylinder/coping, specifically the screw seat interface. A small instrument used in dentistry for enlarging the root canal of a tooth.   • RBM (abbrev)

    Resorbable blast media.  

  • Ratchet

    Instrument with a mechanism consisting of a metal wheel operating with a catch that permits motion in only one direction. Used with threaded implants to facilitate final implant seating.  

  • Raster graphics image (bitmap)

    A dot matrix data structure representing a generally rectangular grid of pixels, or points of color, viewable via a monitor, paper, or other display medium.  

  • Rapid prototyping

    The automatic construction of physical objects using solid freeform fabrication. It takes virtual designs from computer‐aided design (CAD) or animated modeling software, transforms them into thin, virtual, horizontal cross‐sections and then creates each cross‐section in physical space, one after the next, until the model is finished.  

  • Raphe

    An area marking the line of union. A fibrous area where paired muscles meet.
