  • Extracoronal

    That which is outside or external to the crown portion of a natural tooth, e.g., an extracoronal preparation, restoration, partial, or complete crown.  

  • Extracapsular disorder

    Pain and dysfunction associated with the masticatory apparatus, which is caused by etiologic factors located outside the temporomandibular joint capsule.  

  • Extracapsular ankyloses

    Immobility and consolidation of a joint due to rigidity of any structure external to the joint capsule resulting from disease, injury, or surgery.  

  • Extirpation

    The complete surgical elimination or removal of a tissue or organ. The removal of brain tissue for experimental purposes. The total removal of a structure, an organ or growth by surgery. The complete surgical removal of tissue, an organ, or a growth.  

  • Extirpate

    To deliberately pull up or out. To completely annihilate or destroy. To surgically remove – extirpation. To cut away; take out by the roots. To remove something by surgery.

    Method of irrigation during the drilling of osteotomies for the placement of dental implants from an external device, whereby the cooling solution is directed at the drilling bur during preparation of the osteotomy.   • External hexagon

    A hexagonal connection interface of the platform of a dental implant extending coronally. It prevents gross rotation of the attached component.  

  • External connection

    A prosthetic connection interface external to the dental implant platform. The external hexagon is an example.  

  • External bevel incision

    Blade cut, made in an apical‐coronal direction, designed to reduce the thickness of gingiva or periimplant mucosa from the external surface. A resective incision angled in an apicalto‐coronal direction which is intended to reduce the thickness or amount of mucogingival tissue and allow for healing by secondary intention. Often used during gingivectomy and gingivoplasty.
