  • Etching

    Etching

    The act or process of selective dissolution. In dentistry, the selective dissolution of the surface of tooth enamel, metal, or porcelain through the use of acids or other agents (etchants) to create a retentive surface. Application of a corrosive or abrasive material to a glass or metal surface to create a pattern or design.  

  • Etchant

    An agent that is capable of etching a surface.

The relationship of the three components involved in the smile (i.e., gingiva, lips, teeth) determines whether a particular smile will be classified as (a) an extremely high smile line; (b) a high smile line; (c) a moderate smile line; (d) a low smile line.
