  • Antidiaphoretic

    A substance that checks excessive perspiration.  

  • Racemose inflorescence

    A flower cluster, either conical or flattened in outline, in which the main stem continues growing at the tip and there is usually no terminal flower; the flowers open in succession with the oldest flowers at the base and the youngest and smallest at the top.   • Axillary axil

    The upper angle between a bract or leaf and the stem on which it grows; hence axillary flower or bud.

    The growing point of a stem, the tip of an organ; hence apical bud or flower.

    The name given to environmental pollutants derived from petrochemicals, capable of disrupting biological processes. “Foreign oestrogen”, an environmental hazard that comes from the plastic and the pesticide industries.

    The building of a chemical compound by the union of various chemical components, sometimes to mimic the actions of a natural drug (‘nature identical’), or to produce a compound which cannot be found in nature.   • Rectified oil

    An essential oil which has been redistilled to remove impurities or a fraction of its chemical composition.  

  • Infused oil

    Plant material is placed in vegetable oil and gently heated until the aroma has permeated the oil. It is then strained and used as a massage oil for muscular aches and pains, or as a healing agent for skin complaints.  

  • Holistic treatment

    The aim is to treat the whole person, body, mind and spirit, not just the presenting symptoms. It takes into account inherited tendencies, personal history, past medical treatment, individual attitude to the life experience and environmental factors. Treatment is geared to strengthening natural immunity and enhancing a general level of wellbeing.  

  • Fractionated oil

    An essential oil or vegetable oil which has had a fraction of its chemical components removed.
