Quantitative computed tomography

An imaging technique consisting of an array of X-ray sources and radiation detectors aligned opposite each other. As X-ray beams pass through the subjects, they are weakened or attenuated by the tissues and picked up by the detectors. The signals are then compared using a computer, which can construct a cross section of the body using sophisticated modeling techniques.

A method for determining the bone mineral density of a three-dimensional bony specimen, e.g., in the vertebral bodies or the forearms. It is used in the diagnosis of osteopenia and osteoporosis.
