Acute throat inflammation with an abscess round a tonsil.

Pus-filled inflammation of the tonsils and palate, usually a complication of tonsilitis. Incision of the abscess is usually necessary; also called peritonsillar abscess.

A pus-filled swelling in the soft palate around the tonsil: a complication of tonsillitis. The patient has great difficulty in swallowing and surgical incision of the abscess may be necessary to release the collection of pus.

An alternate term for a peritonsillar abscess, which signifies an abscess forming in the soft tissue adjoining the tonsils. This condition arises as a complication of tonsillitis.

An abscess located behind the tonsil causes the inflamed tonsil to shift across the center of the throat, significantly hindering speech and swallowing until the abscess ruptures.
