Rapid antigen test

Any laboratory test used to quickly identify the presence of a specific antigen in a body fluid sample. Rapid antigen tests are often used to assess whether disease-causing viruses or bacteria are present in samples of body fluids (instead of waiting for the results of microbiological cultures). A commonly employed rapid antigen test is used on saliva swabbed from the throat or tonsils of patients suspected of having streptococcal pharyngitis.
