Rapid eye movement

REM occurs after around 90 minutes of sleep with further stages of longer duration occurring as sleep progresses. It is the most active stage of sleep in which vivid dreams occur most intensely.

Period of sleep characterized by rapid eye muscle contractions, detectable by electrodes placed over the skin near the eyes, during which dreaming occurs. REM sleep periods, lasting from a few minutes to about 30 minutes, alternate with nonrapid eye movement (NREM) periods during sleep.

Occurs during 20-25% of sleep time, about 5-6 times during the night. It is accompanied by an increased rate and depth of respirations, but depressed muscle tone. REM sleep includes dreaming, and in men, erections occur during the REM sleep cycle.

Cyclic movement of the closed eyes observed or recorded during sleep.

The stage of sleep during which the eyes flicker rapidly behind closed eyelids and the person dreams.
