Reciprocal innervation

A stretching technique in which an individual contracts the opposite muscle he wants to stretch.

The innervations of antagonistic muscles to provide for the relaxation of one muscle as the other contracts.

Innervation of muscles, as around a joint, in which contraction of one set of muscles leads to the relaxation of opposing muscles.

Contraction of one muscle while the nervous system signals its paired muscle to relax and lengthen. For example, as your biceps flexes, your triceps accommodates by relaxing and lengthening. The result is smooth, coordinated movement.
