Record method

A method for estimating food intake. It is used to obtain detailed information on food intake during a limited number of days, usually 1-7. During that period, the subjects write down everything they eat and estimate the quantities. A problem with this method is that people tend to forget to write things down or change their eating habits due to the fact that they have to write down everything they eat. A record method for 2 days cannot be used to obtain information on the usual diet of the study subjects. Due to the large day-to-day variability in the intake of foods, a 2-day period is too short to obtain a valid estimate of the usual food intake. If information on food consumption at an individual level is needed, the record method has to be repeated several times during a certain period of time. However, the 2-day record method can give a good estimate of food consumption at group level because then a large number of 2-day records is averaged to estimate the mean intake by the group.
