Renal artery stenosis

Narrowing of an artery to a kidney that, if severe, may cause hypertension by increasing renin. The renin then generates angiotensin, a powerful constrictor of arterioles.

An obstruction in one or both arteries that supply the kidneys; a relatively uncommon cause of hypertension. In young women the cause is usually fibromuscular dysplasia of one or both arteries. In older people the cause is usually atherosclerosis.

The arterial passage that provides blood to the kidney experiences a condition characterized by the narrowing or constriction of its diameter.
