Report card

A generic term for performance statements pertaining to health care professionals and providers. Report cards are being issued increasingly by health care institutions, regulatory agencies, insurers, managed care organizations, accrediting bodies and others, giving information such as health care outcomes, costs, charges, severity of illness of patients, intensity of services, institution staffing, medical staff composition, patient satisfaction, provision of preventive services, and other data. Report cards may be designed for such purposes as internal information, for employers, or release to the public. The Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) began releasing, on request, report cards giving details of its survey reports in December 1994.
