A measuring tool developed to increase payment to non-surgeons for cognitive services (i.e., evaluation and management of patients). The scale is based on the total work required for a given service and on other considerations, including the cost of the physician’s practice, the income lost during training, and the relative cost of liability insurance. This method of calculating medical care services was implemented by law in January 1992.
