Rest home

A free-standing facility set up to provide care for patients who are unable to live independently, that is, who need assistance with the activities of daily living (ADL), and who may need occasional assistance from a professional nurse. Such professional nursing service is obtained from a visiting nurse. Regulations usually apply the designation of rest home to a facility with over, say, six beds, but as a practical matter it is usually not economical to operate a rest home with fewer than thirty or forty beds. A facility providing similar service to a smaller number of persons may be called (and licensed as) a “family care home” (FCH) or “adult foster home.” Rest home was formerly called “custodial care home.”
