Condition of unknown etiology where the patient has the urge to move the legs to such a degree that it prevents rest and/or sleep.
Also known as RLS, a condition characterized by unpleasant, restless sensations in the legs and an irresistible impulse to move them. People with RLS may experience tingling, twitching, fidgeting, aching, prickling, or burning of the legs when they lie in bed or sometimes even when they sit down. These sensations are usually worse at night and can lead to insomnia. Sensations are relieved by activity, such as walking. Many people with RLS also experience periodic limb movements in sleep (PLMS). Treatment includes care for any preexisting underlying condition and sometimes use of medications, such as anticonvulsants, benzodiazepines, opioids, levodopa, and dopamine agonists.
