Restless legs syndrome (RLS)

A sleep disorder that does not meet criteria for a specific dyssomnia, characterized by an irresistible urge to move the legs accompanied by an uncomfortable crawling, creeping sensation. RLS is common in end-stage renal disease patients, during pregnancy, and in individuals with parkinson’s disease or irondeficiency anemia. Also known as wittmaack-ekbom syndrome.


Painful discomfort in the legs when not active that can lead to interrupted sleep and fatigue.


A condition in which a person experiences unpleasant sensations, and occasionally involuntary movements, in the legs when at rest, especially at night. In most cases the cause remains a mystery. Some anti-epileptic drugs are said to help.


A condition of unknown cause marked by an intolerable creeping sensation or itching in the lower extremities and causing an almost irresistible urge to move the legs. The symptoms are worse at the end of the day when the patient is seated or in bed and may produce insomnia.


A neurological condition marked by sensations of aching, burning, or creeping in the legs, accompanied by an irresistible urge to move the legs. This condition frequently leads to sleep disturbances and insomnia.
