Retained placenta

Failure to deliver the placenta within 30 minutes after childbirth.


A placenta that is not expelled by the uterus after birth. To remove the placenta, the doctor usually administers an anesthetic to the mother, reaches inside the uterus, and removes the placenta. The mother is then given a drug to encourage the uterus to contract to prevent excessive bleeding.


A placenta not expelled within 30 min after completion of the second stage of labor.


A placenta that isn’t expelled right after or within 30 minutes following the baby’s birth.
