Reverse transcriptase

Viral enzyme that catalyses the conversion of mRNA into cDNA.


Also known as RNA-directed DNA polymerases. A class of enzymes first discovered to be present in RNA tumor-virus which allows the synthesis of DNA using the RNA present in the virus as a template. This is the reverse of what normally happens and hence the name. Reverse transcriptases closely resemble the DNA directed DNA polymerases (DNA polymerases) in that they require the same materials and conditions as the DNA polymerases.


The enzyme used by retroviruses to transform their RNA to DNA.


Enzyme used by retroviruses to form a DNA sequence from their RNA. The resulting DNA is then inserted into the chromosome of the host cell. This enzyme is the target of many anti-AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) drugs, termed reverse transcriptase inhibitors.


An enzyme, usually found in retroviruses, that catalyses the manufacture of DNA from RNA, enabling the viral RNA to amalgamate with the DNA of the infected host.


An enzyme of retroviruses, including HIV, that catalyzes the construction of DNA from the RNA of the virus, the reverse of normal transcription.
