This rule is commonly referred to as the motor rule. According to the motor rule, if the thumb and the first two fingers of the right hand are positioned at right angles to one another, with the index finger indicating the direction of the magnetic field and the middle finger representing the direction of the electron current in the wire, then the thumb indicates the direction in which the wire will move.
