Teething

The period when a baby’s milk teeth are starting to erupt, and the baby is irritable.

Eruption of deciduous teeth (baby teeth, milk teeth) through the gums, usually extending from 4-6 months to about 30 months, when all 20 milk teeth have appeared. Discomfort in the gum area may occur, and symptoms of drooling, biting of hard objects, and irritability are common.

The gradual emergence of teeth in a baby or young child. Baby teeth start breaking through the gums at between 5 and 9 months of age. The two bottom front teeth usually come in first. Although the rate at which children teethe varies greatly, most have all 20 baby teeth by the age of 2½. Just before a tooth emerges, the gum directly above or below may be swollen or sore. A small bump can be felt where the new tooth is coming in. Babies are often fussy and irritable during the process. A one-piece teething ring or pacifier can help reduce the pain. Some teething products are frozen because the cold can be soothing. Home remedies include applying a cold, wet washcloth and rubbing the gums with a clean finger. The pediatrician may recommend acetaminophen to relieve pain. Commercial numbing products should be used with caution because they may cause a problem if swallowed.

The phase during which an infant’s primary teeth start to emerge. Generally, initial indications of teething become apparent around the age of six months.

During the teething process, a baby might display signs of irritability, fussiness, increased need for comfort, potential sleep disturbances, and heightened crying compared to their usual behavior. There’s often an increase in saliva production, leading to dribbling, and the baby’s inclination to chew on whatever is within reach becomes more pronounced.

Prior to a tooth breaking through the surface, the gum area might experience inflammation, leading to redness and swelling. With the eruption of molars, the corresponding cheek might feel slightly warmer and exhibit a reddish hue on the side that’s affected.

Discomfort can be alleviated by applying pain-relieving gels directly onto the gums or by using liquid solutions.

The emergence of teeth, also known as dentition. When teeth are coming in, some otherwise healthy babies might become fussy, likely because of mild gum discomfort.
