Thermocautery

The procedure of removing dead tissue by heat.

Destruction of tissue by heat, as by direct flame or electric current.

An apparatus comprising a platinum loop, typically heated to a subdued red hue through an electric current. It is employed for tissue cutting and, through its cauterizing effect, seals off bleeding areas. While there are alternative cautery methods using various heating sources, the electric cautery is the most commonly employed one.
